Frequently Asked Questions About Shockwave Therapy

  • Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. At Athletic Edge Physical Therapy, we use the PiezoWave 2 system to target injured tissues, increase blood flow, break up scar tissue, and reduce pain — all without surgery or injections.

  • Shockwave therapy is especially effective for chronic sports injuries and stubborn soft tissue issues. At our San Diego clinic, we commonly treat:

    • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain

    • Achilles and patellar tendinopathy

    • Rotator cuff and shoulder pain

    • Glute or hip tendinopathy

    • Chronic muscle strains

    • Low back pain

If you've tried rest, stretching, or even injections without success, shockwave could be your next step forward.

  • Most patients feel a tapping or pulsing sensation, but it's generally well tolerated. Some soreness after treatment is normal and usually fades within 24–48 hours. We adjust the intensity based on your comfort level to make the experience as smooth as possible.

  • While some people feel relief after just one session, most conditions respond best to 3–6 treatments spaced out weekly. Our team will create a personalized plan based on your injury, goals, and how your body responds.

  • Shockwave therapy is not typically covered by insurance, which is why we offer transparent, cash-based pricing. You can use HSA/FSA cards, and we’re happy to provide superbills if you’d like to submit for reimbursement.

  • Yes, you can — but with some nuance.
Before treatment, you can work out normally if pain allows.
After treatment, we recommend light activity only for the first 24–48 hours, especially for the area treated. High-impact or intense workouts may reduce the effectiveness of the healing process. Your physical therapist will give you specific guidance based on your body and training goals.

  • Yes. While shockwave therapy is safe for most people, it’s not recommended if you:

    • Are pregnant

    • Have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device

    • Have a blood clotting disorder or are on blood thinners

    • Have a tumor, infection, or open wound at the treatment site

    • Are under 18 (in most cases)

We’ll screen for any contraindications before starting treatment to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for you.

  • At AEPT, we go beyond just symptom relief. Our sports-focused approach combines shockwave with hands-on treatment, movement retraining, and performance strategies — helping you recover faster and stay pain-free longer. Whether you’re an athlete or just want to move better, we’ve got your back (and your plantar fascia, too).
